1946 – Born Syd Barrett

On 6th January 1946 was born Syd Barrett, singer, guitarist, songwriter of Pink Floyd, and also a co-founding member of the band.

Although he was only musically active for about seven years, he was one of the most influential musicians in British pop history.

After leaving Pink Floyd in 1968, Barrett released two solo albums, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, which were well-received, but were not big sellers at the time.

Pink Floyd wrote many tributes to him after he left, the best-known is “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”.

Syd Barrett died on 7th July 2006, at the age of 60, from complications arising from diabetes.
